kVA to kW Converter
Convert between apparent power (kVA), real power (kW), and mechanical power (HP) for generator sizing.
Typical: 0.8 for generators
Understanding kVA vs kW
kVA (kilovolt-amperes) is apparent power — the total power flowing in a circuit. kW (kilowatts) is real power — the actual usable power. The ratio between them is the power factor (PF).
kW = kVA × PF | kVA = kW ÷ PF | HP = kW ÷ 0.746
Most diesel generators are rated at 0.8 PF (lagging). This means a 100 kVA generator can deliver 80 kW of real power. For resistive loads (heaters, lights), PF is close to 1.0. For motor loads, PF can drop to 0.6–0.8, requiring a larger generator.
