Generator Emissions Explained

Diesel generators produce several types of emissions during combustion:

  • CO&sub2;: Carbon dioxide — the primary greenhouse gas. 2.68 kg CO&sub2; per liter of diesel burned.
  • NOₓ: Nitrogen oxides — contribute to smog and acid rain. Stationary diesel engines emit 10–40 g NOₓ per kWh.
  • PM: Particulate matter — fine soot particles harmful to respiratory health. 0.2–0.5 g PM per kWh.
  • SO&sub2;: Sulfur dioxide — depends on diesel sulfur content. Modern ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) produces minimal SO&sub2;.

The average passenger car emits 4.6 metric tons of CO&sub2; per year (US EPA). A 200 kVA generator running at 70% load for 12 hours daily emits the equivalent of dozens of cars annually.
